It’s certainly the first thing that comes up when you Google the term.But “downsizing” doesn’t just refer to a mid-budget film in which Matt Damon and his wife, Kristen Wiig, decide to go through a shrinking procedure in order to simplify their lives. It’s also a way you could cut down on some clutter and costs in your own life as well. And you don’t even need to shrink down to do it!So what exactly is downsizing, why might you do it, and how might you do it? Let’s find out!What is downsizing?When people other than director Alexander Payne talk about downsizing, they’re likely referring to real estate, though they could also be talking about selling off some of their possessions.“Downsizing can be an effective way to reduce expenses, thus allowing you to potentially build your savings,” explained Associate Financial Planner Anna Keisler. “Downsizing generally means moving to a smaller and less expensive home in order to have a lower monthly mortgage payment. There are other expenses that should decrease when you move to a smaller home as well, such as electricity, gas, housekeeping, maintenance, etc.”Reasons to downsize.You don’t really need an excuse for wanting more money in your pocket. But there are quite a few scenarios that could make downsizing particularly appealing.Sacha Ferrandi, founder of Source Capital Funding (@sourcecapital)  and  Texas Hard Money First, outlined some of those scenarios:“If all your kids have moved out and you no longer need the extra space, it may be time to consider downsizing. Think about your future and if that extra space will still be utilized. A larger home requires more upkeep and if you aren’t actively using the space, you can save mon ey by downsizing to a smaller space that fits your current needs.“You may want to downsize for the simple fact that a lower mortgage payment will take a little bit of burden off your shoulders. With a larger home comes more financial responsibilities. If you do decide to sell, you can use that money to completely fund a new, smaller home. No longer will you have to worry about the responsibility of paying a mortgage.“If you’re nearing retirement age, consider the perks of downsizing. Whether that money is for traveling or daily expenses, having a smaller mortgage payment will allow you to allocate more money towards your retirement fund so you can live comfortably, when the time comes.“Whether it’s racked up credit card debt or student loan debt, it may seem impossible to take control of. Downsizing and having a more affordable mortgage can help you put more money towards your debt in order to pay it off sooner than you thought, and take some of the weight off your shoulde rs.”How to downsize.So you’ve decided to downsize. While there may be some general tips that will apply to anyone, only you know the specifics of your unique situation.“There is no one-size-fits-all approach to downsizing any living situation,” advised Deborah Sweeney (@deborahsweeney), CEO of MyCorporation.com (@mycorporation). “It would be impossible for me to advise that one household downsizes in a manner that is the exact same for another household.My advice is to examine your existing budget and determine which items you can spend less on for a monthly basis. Often, purchases you dont think are all that expensiveâ€"like dining outâ€"are the ones that quickly add up. These can be cut back on, as needed, for more cost-effective options like meal prep and what you save from not dining out can go into savings.”You could even find that downsizing to a smaller place might not save as much money as you’d think it would.“Before you decide to opt for the lower mortgage, consider all the underlying costs you may run into,” suggested Ferrandi. “In order for your current home to sell on the market, you may need to do some repairs or make some updates, which could cost you a good chunk of change. Or maybe the furniture at your current home won’t fit into the smaller home and you’ll have to purchase new stuff. These are just a couple of the cost factors you may want to consider prior to making the commitment.”You’ll also need to figure out what you’re getting rid of, and whether you need to replace it.“Downsizing is a perfect opportunity for you to get rid of any unnecessary clutter or belongings,” advised Ferrandi. “Be realistic about what you need and what you don’t. With a smaller space, you may not be able to bring everything from your current property. This is a great opportunity for you to organize all of your belongings accordingly. Get creative and be efficient in the way you store things so you can best utilize your new s pace.“Plan out your new living space accordingly. With a smaller space, you will need to make sure all of the belongings you are planning to migrate over will fit without making it too crowded. If you’re looking to buy furniture, try going for more functional pieces that will better fit a small space.”And there are a few things you should definitely not do if you’re looking to downsize in a way that saves money.“Just because the house is smaller doesn’t mean it’s going to be less expensive,” warned Keisler. “Say you have a home in the suburbs and want to move to the most in-demand neighborhood of the city: your home may be smaller but it will likely also be more expensive.  The increase in property taxes can also make the trade-off to a smaller home in a pricier area less economically beneficial.”Downsizing can be a big decision. The EMBA Your Ticket to a Career Switch

This is the fourth  post in our Ace the EMBA series on how to apply successfully to a top executive MBA program.   Given today’s volatile business climate, almost everyone in the business world must continuously evaluate and recalibrate their career path, whether they are planning an imminent change or not. It’s an ongoing part of being a business professional. EMBA applicants who aren’t planning a career change still know that their well-laid plans can erupt in an instant. And, increasingly, applicants are pursuing an EMBA specifically to facilitate a career transition.   At University of Michigan’s Ross EMBA program, Lisa Morgan, a Ross EMBA career coach, states that â€Å"80-90 percent of the clients I work with come to me looking to conduct an external search and change employers.† To address this trend, EMBA programs have beefed up their EMBA career services.  The Executive MBA Council’s 2014 report shows that now almost all member programs offer career counseling – 92% as of that year. This jumped from 74% in 2006 and 67% in 2004 (per the 2006 report). â€Å"Career services† include various types of career coaching, self-assessments, alumni networking and events, etc. While career services are common among EMBA programs, the line is usually drawn at regular recruiting (a major draw of regular MBA programs). There are notable exceptions – for example, UCLA Anderson states that â€Å"on-campus recruiting is open to EMBA students in their second year for full-time positions, and in the beginning of their first year for summer internship positions.†Ã‚  Wharton also offers recruiting access. Mixing sponsorship with career services, however, may present an ethical dilemma for the EMBA program. Wharton divides its EMBA students into â€Å"job search eligible† and those who are not eligible: â€Å"To be eligible to access the Job Search Resources listed above, a student must provide the required documentation to indicate that s/he is self-sponsored or has permission from her/his sponsoring company.† Further details explain that some forms and levels of financial sponsorship may be permissible for job-search eligibility. Wharton’s career services are similarly divided into those all students can access, such as career planning and resume review, and those only open to job search eligible students, such as recruiting and participation in Job Search Action groups. It will take some work to sift through the various EMBA programs to identify those that offer the level and type of career service options you particularly require. The upside is that, while recruiting is still rare, those options are increasingly deep and broad. A representative example of a relatively rich offering is Columbia University’s. American Anthropologist Ruth Benedict, once said, â€Å"the purpose of anthropology is to make the world safe for human differences† (Appell-Warren 2015). People fear differences because they fear the unknown – the idea of not knowing and being on the outside really frightens them. This is why often times, society marginalizes people with disabilities because their appearances look different from what society considers normal or because their behaviors do not fit societal norms. However, the field of anthropology broadens the scope of understanding the diversity amongst humans as well as the intricacy of cultures, thereby allowing people to fully appreciate the beauty of distinction. Furthermore, these embodied differences are what make each individual unique. Although, people with disabilities appear to have sensory impairments, they are able to experience the world in their own distinct ways. Because of this distinct experience, there has been a rise of anthropologica l theories on disability in order to understand the beauty of these sensorial adventures. Consequently, these theories on disability directly contrasts the anthropological theories of commodification and political economy. This contrast in seen in the documentary, Black Gold, in which the commoditization of coffee beans cripple and disable the social bodies of the Ethiopian coffee bean farmers. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is ‘one of the pioneering works of modern science fiction’, and is also a frightening story that speaks to the ‘mysterious fears of our nature’. Mary Shelley mocks the idea of â€Å"playing God†, the idea that came from the Greek myth of Prometheus, of the Greek titan who stole Zeus’ gift of life. Both the story of Frankenstein and Prometheus reveal the dark side of human nature and the dangerous effects of creating artificial life. Frankenstein reveals the shocking reality of the consequences to prejudging someone. The creature’s first-person narration reveals to us his humanity, and his want to be accepted by others even though he is different. We are shown that this ‘monster’ is a ‘creature’ and more of a human†¦show more content†¦Perhaps what led Victor to this rejection, why he was so horrified of his creation, was because he had had such high expectations. In ch apter 1, he talks about his life and his parents, he says he was an â€Å"innocent and helpless creature bestowed on them by heaven†. Perhaps this is what he wanted from his creation, for it to be a gift from heaven, and when it turned out it was ‘hideous’ and not so heavenly, he was disappointed. He wanted something that was â€Å"perfect†, â€Å"human†, but what he made was something hideous, and his gigantic structure made him different from a human. However, what we realise later on in the book is that it’s what’s on the inside that makes him human. This monster is capable of human emotions and intelligence, he learns to read write and think like a human. This is what makes us have sympathy to the monster- that we can relate to his feelings. The monster gains our sympathy from the telling of his perspective. His personal story reveals his own suffering and rejection. This monster has not been given a name, so already he must feel like he does not belong. To have a name means you have a sense of identity, and because the creature does not have this he will feel lost and rejected. When he is abandoned by Victor and the villagers, he weeps in despair, which shows he has feelings. Efficient as it is, the reasons for not being fully adopted is that the drawbacks of direct control largely limit its influence. As Friedman (1977) points out, it neglects the positive aspects of labour. That means know-how and practical experience cannot be reflected and diffused. And the formalized system develops passive organization culture which undermines innovation, commitment and flexibility. This contradicts to the requirement of contemporary organization, especially for manufacturing. At modern times, in manufacturing sphere, the key to profitability lies in innovation.(Ackroyd, 2002) It means how to improve application for existing technology, how to create market advantage by good design and exclusivity become the very crucial issues. This is why most of contemporary organizations only retain elements of direct control and tend to be decentralized to emphases on democratic participation. To a broader extent, Taylors standardization philosophy is more widely used, and the new globalized era makes it an urgent requirement for business. Due to the great advantage of diffuse best practice, standardization becomes the key to facilitate the diffusion of businesss know-how to a new area for achieving a competitive advantage. Meanwhile, it is necessary for coordinating activities on a world wide scale and maintaining strict quality to safeguard firms reputation. However, exposed to a greater level of external complexity, the drawback of rigidity brought by standardization must be overcome, thus standardization is a continuous improvement process nowadays, just as the standard operation in Japanese car manufacturing where work is performed according to standard work sequence to insure quality, meanwhile standard if frequently updated to standardize improvement.(Edwards et al, 1993) To achieve this, standardization tends to be combined with a flatter and organic organization s tructure highlighting integration and decentralization to keep innovative and flexible. Scientific selection and training This is perhaps the most relevant principle today because these processes, selection, performance, as well as appraisal and development have been highly formalized in many organizations today (Cole, 2004). In the knowledge-based economy, talent has become the very valuable asset of business to achieve competitiveness. Much effort is devoted by contemporary organizations on selecting the right person. The contribution of Taylor is that he introduced the importance of selection criteria by management, such as the common competencies (i.e. communication skill, initiative) listed by recruitment department. Overstepping Taylors efficiency idea, nowadays the meaning of training is also related to be flexible and acuity enough for competing in a more complex global market, such as the widely-used management trainee schemes in multinationals to cultivate managers with practical experience and global perspective. Money as a motivator Taylor advocates piece-rate payment scheme based on his assumption that human nature is essentially self-interest, workers would be motivated by obtaining the highest possible wage by working in the most efficient and productive way. (Mullins, 2001: p23) In modern age, despite his method can rarely be seen due to the decadence of manufacturing, Based on his philosophy, money motivation still play a crucial role in other form, such as the incentive-based pay system. One common example is sales bonus. The rush of a sales force to place orders before month end reflects highly targeted performance. Thus there is little doubt that this system will work if designed appropriately. In the new context, when various approaches (i.e. job enrichment, team work) are applied to improve personal commitment, money motivator is not narrowed for efficiency as well. However, it is undoubted that Taylors idea of motivation is narrow minded and not suit as an extrinsic motivator, the emphasis on money will decrease staffs intrinsic motivator. Despite that, contemporary organizations usually adopt compromising approach as nowadays, the satisfaction of social needs and achievement needs are regarded as almost equality important motivator. Thus, multiple motivators, money in conjunction with other intrinsic motivator are more prevalent. For instance, performance-based pay and challenging work are used in such successful firms as Microsoft. Conclusion remark It should be admitted that there is almost no other management theory can overstep the influence of scientific management. As Braverman says, the principle of scientific management is not a failed system, but a set of guiding principles which continue to inform and influence the role and function of modern management. Some of the methods he advocates, such as division of labour, scientific selection and training, have become the features of modern society. More primarily, as efficiency is one of the enduring needs of all organizations, his preoccupation with the efficient use of resources thus becomes the driving force behind the evolution of subsequent management theories () and the root of management practice.
